The four queens in love with Orsara

Orsara di Puglia - thundering drums, archers ready to fight, faithful knights and queens beautiful and powerful: the historical parade on Friday 14 August, Orsara of Puglia, is a journey back in time to discover the link between Spain and the land of captains. Grand Master, Knights, clerics and novices of the monastic order of Calatrava Orsara arrived to take possession of the Abbey and its extensive possessions, the "Laure" clear of Byzantine origin. After almost 800 years, that moment is commemorated by a parade queens (the monarchs of the crown of Leon), ladies, soldiers, humble, bold knights and strict warrior monks. The cortege will cross streets and squares of Puglia Orsara beginning to wind their way from Largo San Michele, 18.30, with the start of the parade solemnly announced by drum and colors of the flag of Lucera. To accompany the four queens (Berenguela Empress, Queen Urraca, Queen of Portugal Teresa and the Queen Mother Maria de Molina, all of which are linked to the Abbey of Orsara di Puglia), there will also arcieti in the village. The parade, with its customs and its symbols, covers nearly two centuries of history characterized by thick and diplomatic relations between religious Orsara Puglia and the English city of Leon. The event will include four shows of skill and many representations that are reminiscent of documents published in the book "Footsteps of Calatrava," the book by Anna Raurel y Mur, a scholar of the Austrian Institute of Madrid. On 29 March 1229 Pope Gregory IX granted the Grand Master of the Knights of Calatrava, D. Consalvo Joannes, "... et Ecclesiam monasterium S. Angeli de Ursaria in Apulia ...". Soon after, knights and monks settled in the monastery founded their home course. They had ecclesiastical jurisdiction and feudal Orsara and his "diocese" formed by the Houses of Montecalvelo, Ponte Albaneta Valmaggiore and Castelluccio. They took the title of Calatrava and the Knights of Sant 'Angelo. Officially, the establishment of a knightly order in Orsara was motivated by a desire to Teresa, Queen of Leon, to gratify the Calatrava who had supported and sustained. But others speculate that it was an attempt by the Pope to oppose Frederick II who, at that time, he was deploying contingents of Muslims in nearby Lucerne.
